Most golf instruction will tell you very specifically what to do and when to do it and all the traditional reasons you need to do this to succeed. This is the outer game. You are graded on how well you executed each swing by the result with a technical reason given for each failure. This creates dependancy and fragility and goes against our nature of trial and error and figuring it out. You rush back to the instructor when something goes awry because they are dealing with the symptoms and not the disease which leads to recurrence. The disease which most often causes the symptom in golf is one of doubt, fear, tension, and uncertainty. A lack of understanding about what caused the failure causes this cycle to continue.
A certain amount of technical understanding is necessary to play golf well. Virtually all consistent golfers swing the club within certain physical parameters but those parameters are quite broad and the swings can look very different. What they all have in common is a trust in the motion they use to succeed. When they fail, and it is more often than you might think, they didn' t forget how to swing the club. They didn' t let themself do what they are capable of doing. It was a failure of faith before the failure of execution. This is the inner game. Good players understand this and have a process in place to overcome it.
Golf is not hard physically. Most people can hit a stationary object without much fuss. It is putting yourself in a position to allow this to happen consistently, under varying circumstances, which is the most difficult part of the game. I have spent most of thirty years and tens of thousands of hours honing my teaching skills to incorporate the two sides of the game to give my students the best chance at have lasting success.
